A review on epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of hepatitis D virus infection

چکیده
Hepatitis D Virus (HDV) infection is a widespread disease that has affected a large number of population with hepatitis B Virus (HBV) infection in Iran. Disease is considered to be a major public health problem in Iran. Delta hepatitis is the least common form of chronic viral hepatitis and is the form most likely to lead to cirrhosis. Delta hepatitis is serologically complex, so effective therapy is difficult. The diagnosis is made on the basis of the presence of antibodies against HDV (anti-HDV) and hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in the serum of a patient with chronic liver disease. It is confirmed by the presence of the HDV antigen in liver or HDV RNA in the serum (by reverse-transcriptionpolymerase-chainreaction assay). It is important to determine whether delta hepatitis is present because the responses to therapy of patients with this disease are less satisfactory than those with hepatitis B, and the recommended regimen of interferon alfa is different. The optimal treatment of HDV is uncertain. Thus, patients should ideally be treated as part of a clinical trial. The only treatment approved for chronic HDV is interferon alfa. Treatment should be administered for one year; whether longer duration of treatment will improve response rates remains to be established. Available data have not demonstrated an advantage from the addition of a nucleos/tide analogue.

Childhood Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection causes both medical and public health challenges. Infants who acquire HBV parentally have up to 90% risk of developing chronic HBV infection. It is now estimated that approximately 10% of worldwide cancers are attributable to viral infection, with the vast majority (>85 %) occurring in the developing world. In this distribution, elevated rate and prev...

Interferon (IFN)-based therapy, the cornerstone for treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, is generally considered to be the single most effective treatment strategy for this infection. Although most adverse effects of IFN therapy respond very well to the cessation of this drug, there are reports of serious irreversible adverse effects. This review article evaluates the adverse effects...

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Hepatitis B Virus (HBV), a DNA virus with a human-only reservoir, is a worldwide public health problem. Approximately 45.0% of the world’s population is considered to live in areas of high endemicity with a lifetime risk of infection of more than 60.0%. The present study aimed to assess the level of understanding and awareness about Hepatitis B immunization among the first a...

Zika virus is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that is becoming a new global threat. Currently, serologic (ELISA) and molecular (RT-PCR) testing make the diagnosis of Zika virus infection. There is no specific drug available for Zika virus infection, and treatment is supportive based on reducing symptoms of disease. Protection against mosquito bites is the most effective way to prevent the infection...
